I will start off by saying that I know I am fortunate to have a dedicated crafting space! It hasn't always been like this, LOL. I decided to do a craft room makeover to make my crafting space more usable and functional! This is a craft room makeover slash scrapbook room makeover all wrapped up in one! 
Craft Room Makeover
Having a craft room is amazing. Let's face it…crafting is messy and I always hated when I had to use the kitchen table for my crafty endeavors.
In our last home I shared a small space with my husband…it was part office, part craft room. The truth is that it was basically a place to store my scrapbooking supplies. I didn't use it for actually crafting very often.
It was one of those walk-through rooms and it was hard to keep it closed off to little fingers! There was no leaving projects out on the desk because they wouldn't make it, LOL.
In our current house we had a small extra bedroom that I use and it is all mine! 😆
Big Desk Big Problem
My husband bought a huge oak desk many years ago for his office. This desk is awesome if you need a really large, really heavy desk. It worked great for him for years.
Fast forward….this is the desk we used at our last house and I planned to continue using it in my new craft room.
The problem quickly became obvious…the desk was TOO BIG. It is too heavy to move so you can't “rearrange” even if there was another place in the room to put it.
As much as I hated to get rid of a solid oak desk…it had to go in order for my craft room makeover to work.
Ikea to the Rescue
I bought one of the Ikea Kallax units
This unit takes up one whole wall in my craft space. The picture above shows an unedited before photo…yes the place is a mess!
I needed to do something about a working desk since I got rid of the big oak desk. I knew that Ikea would be able to help me with my craft room makeover!
Utilizing all the space around the walls was important to me. I wanted to have some open space in the middle of the room. There was also a desire for the desk portion to be easily movable and rearrangeable.
I decided to get 2 Linnmon
While I was there I also bought a white chair to match everything! The only problem I have now is that my black cat has decided my white chair is his favorite place to sit!!! Oh the cat hair I am dealing with, LOL.

A Hutch for $5
I am in a scrapbooking Facebook group that is just for scrapbook organization and craft rooms. It amazes me how lucky people in this group are…they find the COOLEST stuff for their craft rooms and always for a steal.
I became that lucky person a few weeks ago. We were in Kansas City and stopped at a big thrift store. The whole store was on sale for Halloween and everything was 50% off. I found this really nice white hutch and it was only $5.00.
Umm….really? I was doing the happy dance for sure. This is a nice heavy hutch and I knew it would be perfect on top of my Ikea tables.
Putting Everything in It's Place
One of my biggest problems was that I could never find anything. I didn't have a good organizational system going on and I knew that had to change.
Once I got the furniture put together and arranged I started the deep craft room cleaning. I went through EVERY SINGLE basket, bucket and container.
Sorting, sorting and more sorting took place. Did I throw anything out? YES I DID. Most of it was just actual junk, old papers, etc.
I found some things I didn't even know I had anymore!
This was a very cathartic exercise and I know I will get more scrapbooking and crafting done now that I everything has a place.
I think the actual act of sorting all of the supplies can be overwhelming, but it is vital to a good craft room makeover. What is the point of a scrapbook room makeover if I can't locate my scrapbooking supplies?
Craft Room Makeover Decor
My new space may seem a little eclectic to some people, but to me it is a peaceful space to work. This space is all about ME.
I am decorating it with things that make ME HAPPY. When I walk in the door to this room I want to smile and stay forever.
One of my favorite decor items is a beautiful picture I bought last year when my husband and I went to New York City during December. It was probably the best trip I have ever taken….snow…walking…just connecting with my husband in a beautiful city.
Anyway…this picture draws me in every time I look at it and it goes perfectly in my happy place…my craft room.
I am also sitting out items from my childhood…items relating to my own children. I am doing some DIY projects for small storage containers.
Oh…buttons. I am obsessed with buttons and although I do have jars throughout the house…I have a LOT of buttons in my craft room! Thank goodness for the hutch, right? 🙂

I still have work to do…more wall decor to get and put up. There are some other organizational ideas floating in my mind that I hope to put into action. Check back because I will update this post as I proceed!
